Not sure what possessed me to look this up on our current insurance certificate, but apparently none of the insurance plans offered through my husband's work allows any infertility treatment coverage after sterilization by choice--elective V or TL. Even the more pricey plans exclude it where they cover IVF up to $25,000 lifetime. It also lists that the VR is excluded in addition to listing that infertility treatments as a result of elective sterilization is excluded. Does that mean that IUI or IVF would not be covered if DH numbers were not high enough for natural conception?
If this is the case, I wonder if the man is restored to decent numbers and it is identified that the woman has the problem then that infertility can be treated??? I would imagine so, because her situation would not be elective sterilization, but who knows?
Those of you doing this, does your ins. help at all or are you all on your own?
Right now, I never intended to go that route, but it is annoying that it may not even be a possibility (in terms of insurance help).
Anyone know about this?

I think if the issue is you not Dh then you are ok with insurance paying, otherwise it would be out of pocket for IUI and IVF  |

I don't know for sure, but what I *think* is that it all depends on the way the DR does the coding. If it's done in such a way that the treatment is is being done because of male infertility factors, then you're pretty much out of luck. But, if they do the coding as it being for female infertility, then you *may* stand a chance at getting it covered by ins.
It really sucks, but there are a lot of ins companies/policies who won't pay a penny for ANY fertility treatments, including IUI, if there was a voluntary sterilization on either side.

That is what I was afraid of...so when we finally get the VR done, that's it. It is probably better that way more of an absolute, I am not good with options.

Carrie...My insurance doesn't cover anything with fertility. IUI is pretty cheap for me, so once we can get sperm going that is what we are heading to do. Makes me crazy.

Carrie, my insurance DOES cover infertility and we are currently being treated. The RE is different from the VR dr (which was not covered), so the insurance company really doesn't even know about the VR. RE tested DH's sperm counts and they are in the normal range so the fertility treatment is focused on me. My infertility treatment is coded as "habitual aborter not currently pregnant". If you find that DH's sperm count goes back to a fertile number, and you can't seem to get pg, they will likely initially consider it secondary infertility on your part. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, our current plan would not help with anything no matter what, but if we went with the most expensive plan it would help with some. However I think it is expensive enough it would be about the same to just pay IUI out of pocket! DH isn't to keen on the IUI idea anyway so it might not even matter--I am really getting ahead of myself! Oh well, I am an obsessive planner.

In our case, nothing is covered by the insurance. My RE is pretty awesome and codes the visits for the IUI as something else so the insurance will pay.
