I have crocheted some baby hats...my friend and I are working on starting a business selling prop hats and baby stuff. She is a photographer. I will take pics and post.

I sooo want to learn how to knit! Then I can make longies/shorties/skirties. Do you have any recommendations for websites or books to help a beginner learn to knit?

I used the Complete Idiot's guide to knitting and crocheting to get started. It has easy to follow directions and basic starting patterns. It "walks" you through the steps (casting on, knitting/purling, binding off) using pictures and teaches you how to read a pattern. After the basics it gets into other areas like circular knitting, different techniques and more complicated patterns. I still refer to this book when I come across a questionable pattern.

Thanks for the recommendation! I think I'll see if my library has it, then I can see if I really like knitting before buying too much. lol

I knit too. I am so ready to be able to knit those baby blankets and hats.
Leslie there are also some great videos on you tube that really help you learn to knit. I taught myself from a book as well, but it was difficult to figure out some of the stitches by looking at a picture so I would look it up on you tube.

Cindy, great point! I'll have to check out youtube also.
How do I know what size needles I want though? I know that you need smaller needles for a smaller "weave", and larger for a larger one, but what is a good basic size needle?

Each thing you knit calls for a different size needle. A lot of them call for a size 7 or size 8 though.

Okay, I guess the first thing I should do is find a pattern I like, then figure out the needle size, then figure out how to knit. lol

Honestly I would recommend buying a knitting kit for kids. It sounds stupid but they only cost about $8-$15 (depending on where you get it) and they come with basic needles, yarn, a yarn needle (to weave in your ends) and detailed instructions. You'll be able to get a feel for knitting without sinking too much money into it. After I started knitting, I picked up one of these kits for my daughter (she was 11 at the time) and she had no problems reading the instructions and figuring it out on her own - including the casting on and binding off.
