My YDD's birthday is coming up and she has decided that she wants to have a Harry Potter birthday party! So now I need to figure out how to make a Hogwarts Seal for the Invitations, make realistic invitations (like the ones that Harry got inviting him to Hogwarts), a cake (thinking this one or one like the sorting hat www.flickr.com/photos/21678399@N00/2498896405/) and a pinata. Oh vey that child makes it difficult

Sounds like it's going to be great though! For the pinata you could make the sorting hat. It would be pretty easy to make the basic cone shape, and then add the brim. Or even make an owl pinata. How fun!! I remember when my youngest wanted a Yoshi birthday, and we made a big Yoshi egg pinata for him. He had a blast with it.

I have only tried making a pinata once and it was a big fail. So how do you make a pinata?

When we made ours, we started with a large blown up balloon, then cut strips of newspaper about 1" wide, and made a glue out of flour and water. You then just dredge the newspaper through glue and layer it on the ballon, letting each layer dry before starting the next.
When you need the piñata to have a shape other than the round/oval balloon shape, you find a lightweight card board and cut it to the desired shape to fit against the balloon AFTER you've place 2-3 layers of the newspaper on the balloon. Then you continue to layer the newspaper on until it has a thick enough coating to sustain being a piñata.
You can do the opening a couple different ways: leave a hole at the top from the beginning the process, or cut an opening after you're done making it. Either way, you'll pop the ballon and remove it through that opening, pierce small holes for the string/rope to be threaded through at the top, decorate it and fill it up with goodies.
